The link you are provided with is something like http://www.amphosted.com/billing/aff.php?aff=000, when a visitor clicks that, it ads one visit to your visits referred count, this lets you know how popular your links are. It also sets a cookie, if the visitor makes an account, and pays for the account, it will add the new member to your your referrals list, if the member stays a member for 31 days (1 day after the money back guarantee), you will have 20% of his/her payment added to your balance.
